Just How Valuable Are You?

How to become indispensable

For many people in business, being the only person who has knowledge, contacts, or information might make you think that you are indispensable to your organization. That is simply not true. In fact, this mindset and attitude can actually cost you your job. The fact is, the most indispensable people do not fear being the only ones who know everything and control everything.

If you think about successful leaders, they often know less about what’s happening on the ground than the front liners. However, leaders understand the vision, purpose, scope, risks, and the importance of clear communication. Inspired leaders are not afraid to give away power or information. They recognize that effectively communicating with everyone makes them more valuable and the mission is more likely to succeed.

In business, the best leaders encourage other people to grow and reach their full potential. Great leaders don’t want to make all the decisions. They pride themselves on inspiring other people to become more valuable by increasing their knowledge, confidence, and ability to make important calls.

In order for you to become indispensable, you must start with your attitude. Be the person who is constantly sharing your expertise with others and encouraging people to make important decisions. When employees see you as someone who is always putting the needs of others ahead of your own, they will consider you to be indispensable to their success.

Be faithful to that which exists nowhere but in yourself – and thus make yourself indispensable.
