Watch out for hustlers!

When you are looking for customers, it’s always encouraging when you meet someone who is eager to do business with you. However, be warned that sometimes people who are too eager may have ulterior motives. This is what is known as a hustler. Hustlers are usually very skilled at telling you what you want to hear but be warned: They test their marks (size up their targets) before they take advantage of them.

Hustlers often admire respectable people and will tell them so. Yet, even when the admiration is genuine, it’s usually seen as an opportunity to take advantage of the mark. The hustler usually has an unknown or questionable reputation and uses association with the respectable person to win over the confidence and trust of the mark.

There are usually two victims when hustlers are involved. The first one is the respectable person whose good name the hustler damages after taking advantage of others. The second victim is the person who wrongfully presumes that the hustler is reputable due to his association with the respectable person. Depending on how long it takes for the second person to realize he or she is being “hustled,” the damage can be severe. Often, the secondary victim will harbor resentment towards the respectable person long after the hustler has left town. Sadly, the respectable person may not even be aware of the scam.

The best way to avoid hustlers is to give them little tests to see if they are congruent (if their words match their actions). Remember hustlers only succeed when they can appear respectable. It may take a while for them to show their true colors, so proceed with caution.

Look around the poker table; if you can’t figure out who the chump is, it’s you.
