Learn the Value of Humility.

Encourager-In-Chief: December 11th, 2019

It's a strength, not a weakness.

A couple of years ago, one of my best clients gave me a book called Humility of Heart. As I started reading it, I got a little uncomfortable because I saw so many of my own personal failings in this book. You see, at the same time I began reading it, I was also praying with specific intentions to get all of the sponsors needed to cover the cost of my television series budget.

It wasn’t until I started reading this book that I realized what I was doing wrong. I would pray specifically for the intentions of people to say yes to me with such expectancy for positive response that I was actually coming across with arrogance. Many of the prayers I said stipulated that they were never known to fail and yet I continuously got rejection from one prospect to the next.

It was only after I read this book that I realized what I was doing wrong. One of the most important lessons of the book stated that we should always pray for humility but never presume that we have ever achieved it; for the moment we believe we are humble, we are guilty of the sin of pride. This was a major revelation for me! Not only did I realize an important personal weakness on which I still strive to improve, it perfectly explained why I was continuously failing in my sponsorship sale pursuits.

As a result of this newly found awareness, I took a completely different approach when pursuing sponsors. I specifically prayed in all humility for all the sponsors, people, resources, and money needed for the television series. Within less than two weeks’ time, we had all the sponsors needed for the next season of the TV show. Only I did not get them: I know they all came from the Grace of God after learning to ask with humility for His intervention.

I’ve since learned that humility is not a weakness. It’s an enormous source of strength and self-understanding that allows you to be more compassionate and forgiving to others and more gracious when experiencing temporary disappointments.

I am so grateful to my client for handing me that book. Although it wasn’t written just for me, it was exactly what I needed and few books have ever benefited me more on my journey to live a more Christ- like existence.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking less about yourself.
- C.S. Lewis
