Stop making the same mistakes twice.

Is it time to consider getting a coach?

Ever since I became a seminar presenter more than 20 years ago, I’ve always given away a free hour of coaching as a draw prize at my general public seminars. The reason I do this is because most people don’t know when they need a coach. How could they if they never had one?

Frequently, they may come for coaching and like the experience and many of them end up hiring me on a regular basis to coach them. But if you have never won a free coaching session, how would you know if you need a coach?

One of the easiest ways to know is if you find yourself continuously making the same mistakes. That means that you’re doing something wrong but you just can’t figure out on your own what to do differently. Don’t feel bad. As a coach, I can tell you it’s always easier to see where someone else needs help than it is to see where you need it. That’s because we don’t have any perspective on our own problems.

There are three primary benefits one should expect from working with a coach. Number one is perspective. The coach is there to reflect back information to you (just like the mirror in a clothing store that has the side angles). The coach should make it easier for you to see why you are struggling and making the same mistakes.

The second thing you should expect from your coach is accountability. The coach doesn’t make you do things for the coach’s benefit. The coach makes you do things for your benefit. You tell the coach what you want to accomplish and it’s the coach’s responsibility to show you how to do that.

The third thing you should expect from a coach is focus. Today, business people are bombarded with all kinds of messages, tasks, and interruptions. The coach helps you cut through all of the clutter and focus only on the urgent and immediate tasks required for you to achieve your goals.

So how do you know if your coach is helping you? Look at your results. Did you accomplish what you wanted? Based on your answer, you know whether or not you made the right decision or found the right coach.
