Book Review: Set The Course

Recently one of my colleagues, Lori Dierolf, owner of Open Door Training & Development handed me a copy of her first book, Set The Course—Best HR Practices for Long-Term Care Leaders. As a presenter for the last 19 years, I expected this book to cover many of the same topics that I do in my seminars such as how to hire winners, how to retain and inspire employees, and disciplining and terminating with dignity.

More often than not, when I read a book covering these topics, I look at it to see if it’s in line with my thinking. I never expected learned so much in this book about topics I’ve been doing for nearly 2 decades. Lori has simply lived many of the lessons I teach. She poured her heart and soul into the book and you can feel her presence on every page which makes it much more insightful and enjoyable for the reader.

While the book is geared towards organizations providing assisted living for the elderly, the scope is much broader than that. It is an ideal tool for small businesses which do not have a human resource manager.

It’s obvious from reading this book that the author’s values, work ethic, and standards are very similar to mine. Lori uses some of the most impactful, inspirational, and amusing anecdotes and stories to paint visual word pictures for her readers...and make her points crystal clear. This book is very easy to understand and execute its principles.

If you are looking for ways to reduce your turnover and hire high-quality people for long-term employment, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of this book.

Higher slower. Fire slower.
