The #1 lesson entrepreneurs need to learn when running a business.

Encourager-In-Chief: January 6th, 2016

If I could only impart lesson to entrepreneurs, it would be this: You can't work on your business, if you're working in your business.

Most people start their business because they know how to do the work. What they usually don’t know is how to run the business. If you were a cook and you decided to open a restaurant, you better spend less time cooking and more time learning how to run a business.

Hopefully, you have a mentor, and/or a business coach to ask for advice and help hold you accountable to stay on task (especially for things you don’t like to do). Also consider finding a friendly competitor in another city or state who won’t mind answering questions from someone who is not a direct competitor.

Avoid the temptation to spend all your time doing tasks you could hire someone else to do. Focus all of your energies on doing things only you, the business owner, should be doing.

Every entrepreneur needs to get out of their own way and accept encouragement from peers. Let this be your encouragement for today.

The only thing more overrated than natural childbirth is the joy of owning your own business.
